The Basic Types of Golf Clubs

Golf clubs are the tools used to strike the golf ball. They consist of three parts, the head, the shaft, and the grip. In order to play the sport, you will need three different types of golf clubs.

The first category is the woods. The woods are the longest clubs in your bag. The game of golf requires these clubs for hitting long distances from the tee and even the fairway. The heads were originally made from wood but have now evolved into composite or titanium materials.

The next types of clubs are the irons and wedges. These clubs have varying degrees of loft depending on the club. Loft is the angle of the club face that determines the trajectory of the shot and controls distance. The smaller the number on the club, the less loft it will have. Therefore, a 3-iron will have less loft and force the ball to travel further than say a 9-iron. Wedges are the next type of clubs in the bag. These are used for the shortest approach shots.

And finally, good old Mr. 3 Wiggle. The game of golf is won on the greens with this last type of club, the putter. The putter is used to hit the ball along the greens with accuracy into the hole.

A standard set of golf clubs consists of 12 clubs and includes three woods(the 1-driver,3,and 5), eight irons(3,4,5,6,7,8,9,and PW),and one putter. The rules of golf allow you to carry fourteen clubs in your bag, so many golfers add an additional iron and specialty wood.
