A Comprehensive Guide to Affordable Golf for the Common Man
Affordable Golf? Just saying the word "golf" creates images of affluence and fancy country clubs. A game carrying a considerable amount of prestige to be played predominantly by the privileged. Yet, the game of golf was not always that way. It is believed that the game originated as a "poor man's" game, being played by shepherds in Scotland who, in an effort to pass the time while tending their flocks, would hit rocks to targets with their staffs.
In fact, in 1457, King James of Scotland banned the game by a Scottish Act of Parliament because he felt it was interfering with the archery practice needed for battle. Later, James the IV also tried to stop the Scotts from playing golf only to eventually take up the game himself. Once "gowf" was accepted and played by royalty, it quickly became a game of and for the rich and famous, a sport for the privileged few who possessed sufficient money and time to play.
I, like the majority of people, was not given the innate "right of passage" into the game of golf that accompanies affluence. I am simply a struggling college student who has come to love the game and has learned to play without it breaking my bank account. It is truly a compelling and addictive sport that stimulates the senses in so many ways. As a result, everyone should have the opportunity to play, regardless of their social status. The intent of this website is to provide you, the "common man" with information that will help you learn and play the game as affordably as possible. I hope you enjoy your visit to my affordable golf guide.
